Pharmacological effect
Acetylsalicylic acid belongs to the group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs with analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Its mechanism of action is the irreversible blocking of enzymes responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandins. Additionally, acetylsalicylic acid prevents platelets from clotting by blocking the formation of thromboxane A2.
Pharmacokinetics Upsarin Upsa
When taken by mouth, acetylsalicylic acid is absorbed into the blood quickly. Plasma concentrations peak in 15 to 40 minutes. It is then rapidly hydrolyzed and converted to salicylic acid, which is an active metabolite. Bioavailability is dose-dependent and is 60% for doses less than 500 mg and 90% for doses over 1 g. Acetylsalicylic acid and salicylic acid are rapidly distributed throughout the body, including the placental barrier and breast milk. Most salicylic acid binds to plasma proteins (90%). Half-life from the blood is 15 to 20 minutes for acetylsalicylic acid and 2 to 4 hours for salicylic acid. Acetylsalicylic acid is metabolized in the liver and excreted primarily via the kidneys as salicylic acid and glucuronic conjugates.
